Back to School

As a full-time member of Corporate America, each summer I am reminded of the multiple month long summer vacation of laziness, idleness, and sunshine I no longer get to take.  And every fall, the same feeling returns with the failure to participate in the right to buy new school supplies.  One of my favorite movie quotes uttered by Tom Hanks is “Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils.”  There is something about new notebooks (a variety of colors, college-ruled), pens (fine point, black ink), and pencils (the mechanical kind, #2 lead of course) that wipes the slate clean and makes you feel Mr. Opportunity has knocked on your door – new classes, new friends, and new chances to conquer the world.

As an ECLP, there may not be a reason to buy new school supplies but each fall we get to share in that feeling of “new” during the recruiting season.  Instead of new notebooks, pens, and pencils, we scrub our recruiting materials, launch new communication channels, and line up exceptional speakers.

As the Lead Recruiter for USC, I get the fantastic opportunity to be directly involved.  There are lots of events to be planned and even more behind the scenes work to maximize GE’s presence at Popovich Hall and meet the best students Marshall has to offer.  The USC Recruiting team is fortunate to have the best Trojans from Connecticut to Orange Country and from GE Capital to NBCU supporting our efforts.

Each time I turn around there seems to be another great event that we are planning.  So Trojans, sharpen your pencils and update your calendars:

  • Marketing Institute: early September

  • GE Case competition for 1st years in Strategy Class: September 24th

  • GE Day with Executive Speaker and ECLP Full-time recruiting: September 24th

  • NYC Trip for 1st years:  week of December 7th

And that’s just the beginning as we have a few more special events up our sleeves that we’ll announce soon.  All dates are subject to change, of course.  In the meantime, look for the official announcements on campus and I look forward to meeting you all in person.
