Caring for the Community

Post a Comment The 2010 ECLP global conference kicked off early Sunday morning in Greenwich CT., where approximately 280 ECLPs participated in a variety of community service activities. Casually dressed in shorts and tees, we were ready to bond, form new relationships and make a difference in the community.
Volunteer opportunities were abundant…teams pitched in at various locations and participated in many activities.
From yard work to play time, Adopt-a-Dog rescue shelter in Armonk, NY was in need of love and care. Volunteers/dog-lovers kept busy—laying gravel and playing fetch with many dogs in need of a good home, including 10 Beagles recently rescued from an animal research center.
Teams worked inside and out to improve the appearance of Stamford Academy, a charter school opened by Domus. Projects included, planting flowers and spreading mulch, sorting books for the library and painting murals in partnership with The Foundation for Hospital Art.
Approximately 140 veterans were greeted with smiles at Veterans Hospital, a medical facility based in West Haven, CT. Volunteers sat with residents and listened to war stories while others gardened and prepared food for an outdoor BBQ cookout.
Sorting and organizing food was the main event at this Stamford-based Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. The team helped shelve food and clean the warehouse which stores food for about 100 non-profit agencies and programs that serve low income people.
Tenants at the Shelter for the Homeless in Stamford, CT were very enthusiastic about the help they received, saying it would have taken them weeks to complete these projects. Groups split up and weeded, planted flowers and shrubs, changed light bulbs, painted the front porch, and professionally cleaned the carpets.
The day was extremely fulfilling and a great overall success!
