Remember to "Choose Your Boss Wisely"

Post a Comment After almost two years on program, the ECLP off-program process is now staring me squarely in the face. It’s time for me to finish out the last two months of my third and final rotation and find a more permanent home.
The off-program process for ECLPs is different in each business. However, the one thing that is consistent across businesses is that this will be the first time in two years that we won’t be placed into roles. Much like an external candidate, graduating ECLPs are expected to apply and interview for available opportunities.
In preparation for these upcoming interviews, I’ve started to review my on-program journey and accompanying accomplishments. While putting together some of my thoughts, I came across a great Harvard Business Review Blog by Priscilla Claman that focuses solely on why it’s important to “Choose Your Boss Wisely.”
Claman’s blog highlights that finding the right manager is equally important to finding the right role. She suggests that interviewees focus on asking the right questions during the interview and look for any “repeated patterns of unconscious behavior” exhibited by your potential future boss. “Notice how the interviewer is saying things,” Claman elaborates, “not just what he is saying.”
Seems like common sense, but given how easy it is to become locked in on a specific role, I found this to be a timely reminder going into interview season.
