Going Off Programme

I’m now in the final stages of getting my off programme role. So, as well as finishing up my current rotation, I am also sorting out the details for what happens next after my final ECLP Conference in July. For me, the process has been fairly smooth. During my second and third rotations, I worked on emissions and energy efficiency projects for GE Transportation. As a result of this work and a general new trend in the industry my business wants to create a new role looking at these issues in Europe. I started working on ideas in January with Transportation’s Chief Marketing Officer in terms of what this role might look like, and now we’re just finalising the last details.

GE Goes Back to Basics

Jeff Immelt recently did an interview in the International Herald Tribune where he laid out GE’s overall strategy in this new, post-crisis age. As he explained, GE will bring our focus back to manufacturing, technology and product innovation, which were the original DNA and history of the company. The financing side, as we know, is being scaled down and will be aligned more closely to supporting the industrial side of the business. Seeing It All Come Together

I’m currently in the last couple of weeks of my second rotation and am on a plane flying to Florence to meet some of my new team members for my third rotation. So, it’s the perfect time to blog!

The period between rotations is always an unusual time. You are normally fairly busy finishing off the rotation - finalising pitches, chasing down small details, getting ready to hand over your work to someone else and generally trying to leave a tidy desk behind you; Yet you also want to hit the ground running on your new rotation so there’s lots of background reading and research on your new business to be done.  As always, you have to manage your time to make sure you keep both your old and new Assignment Leader happy!

Global Nature of Working at GE

I had always thought of myself as having somewhat of a global outlook. I lived in a so called “world city” (London), I’d worked overseas (Sweden), holidayed overseas and even took an interest in world affairs. But it was only when I came to work at GE in the ECLP programme that I actually felt part of a truly international environment on a daily basis. The global nature of GE and the ECLP programme is one of the things I really love about my job. I’m based in Brussels,

Applying to GE's ECLP

Recruiting for the ECLP Class of 2013 will begin soon and many of the current ECLPs on various recruiting steering committees around the globe are starting to arrange campus visits to deliver program presentations. One question I remember getting last year was how to prepare best for the application stage and interviews. So here are my top 3 recommendations of what to research and think about before you put fingers to keyboard and apply:

  1. GE - It seems obvious, but its amazing that each year some candidates don’t do this bit of homework. We recognise that GE is a big company and it takes a long time to understand its intricacies in detail, but
