Everything You Need To Know About Joining ECLP - Part 2

During June and July, approximately 175 people will be joining ECLP as either a Summer Associate or full-time ECLP.  As both of these groups prepare to join the Program, I asked ECLP experts from around the world to share some tips and advice about the first few months on program.  As part of our 5x5 series, this is our second post, so be sure to check out the first post to learn more about who is answering the questions, as well as what they had to think about Question 1

ECLPs start the program with a Global Conference, where they meet other ECLPs, as well as GE Senior Leadership.  What advice would you give to new Program Members about their first Conference?

Everything You Need To Know About Joining ECLP - Part 1

During June and July, approximately 175 people will be joining ECLP as either a Summer Associate or full-time ECLP. As both of these groups prepare to join the Program, I asked ECLP experts from around the world to share some tips and advice about the first few months on program.

This will be our second 5x5 series, which means we asked 5 people the same 5 questions, and over the next few weeks you’ll see their answers to each question. Before diving into the Question 1, here’s who graciously offered their best advice to the incoming Class of 2014 and Summer Associates:

A Post-Conference Interview with Erin Kim, GE Capital’s ECLP Program Manager

Erin Kim became GE Capital’s ECLP Program Manager just over nine months ago. In her current role, she is the active HR Manager for Capital’s ECLPs and provides them with general HR support, including managing the mentoring program, offering career advice and overseeing performance evaluations. She also leads recruiting efforts, which means she screens resumes, handles referrals, attends diversity conferences, leads interviews, and spearheads the onboarding process. And, if that wasn’t enough, Erin is also in charge of the GE Capital trainings that happen twice a year prior to the Global ECLP Conferences.

As a new member of ECLP’s leadership team, Erin brought a fresh perspective to Buenos Aires, and I sat down with her to hear about her favorite memories from her first GE Capital Training and Global ECLP Conference.

Looking Back On An Unforgettable 2011 and Excited for 2012

2011 was a great year.  I finished my MBA (in China), started ECLP, and got married.  A new degree, 2 life changes and a trip around the world… it was awesome.  Just a few weeks ago when we said goodbye to 2011 and hello to 2012, I thought to myself, how could this year possibly compare to 2011.  And then I remembered, I’m in ECLP.  That means, this year, I will change jobs two times – once in March and once in October.  I will make at least one international trip with our two week training and conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and fingers crossed our GE ECLP October 2012 conference is in a similar, sweet, international location.   So right off the bat, this sounds like it could a pretty good year, but let’s dig into it a bit more.

Sleepless nights. Cravings for Red Bulls and coffees. Pregnant pauses and stutters as you give your best responses to interview questions while standing in front of your bathroom mirror.

Yes, it sounds like you have a case of the GE ECLP Interview Forum jitters. And as someone who went through this just one year ago, I’ve pulled together some tips to get you through the next few days as you wait with excited anticipation for November 3rd and 4th.

Friends, Colleagues and a Support Network

When I went through recruiting, one comment I consistently heard was, “Your ECLP class becomes your friends, your colleagues and your support network.”  I never thought too much about this statement, but now, eight weeks after beginning the program, I can’t stop thinking about it.

I came to ECLP from the part-time MBA program at NYU Stern and a full-time job as a Project Manager for a real estate company.  When I met my ECLP classmates for the first time during Capital training, I was amazed at how different we were.  We all had diverse work experiences – a General from the Army, a lawyer from a big NYC law firm, a Marketing Manager for a TV network, just to name a few.  We all went to different business schools, some full-time, some part-time and some through Executive programs.    And, we all had unique backgrounds – from the west coast, from the eastern hemisphere, recently married, a new parent, or totally single.
